Spencer Izen
Director/Lead Advisor / Researcher

Spencer is the Editor-in-Chief of The Griffins’ Nest, the student newspaper of Eric Hamber Secondary School. Spencer led the publication through a transformation, reimagining its entire role, purpose, and operations. His model of student media is quickly becoming the standard for secondary school publications across British Columbia.

Spencer and another editor independently drafted Canada’s first student journalism protection legislation, the Student Press Freedom Act, after multiple censorship experiences. It has since been endorsed by some of the biggest names in Law and Journalism, including the Centre for Free Expression, BC FIPA, and Canadian University Press.

Currently in Grade 12, Spencer intends to study political science in post-secondary.
